Equipment Upgrade - going from Knee v1.0 to v2.0

As most of our regular readers know, I'm having knee replacement surgery next week, and consequently I've decided to document the process here.

First, let's examine the evidence.

Current state of my knee.

This shows what my knee looked like just about a year ago. The one on the right is grinding the bones on the inside, which is apparently what severe osteoarthritis looks like. By comparison, the left knee has a nice even space between the bones. I'm a computer programmer but even I can tell which one looks healthy.

$6,000,000 worth of knee, apparently

Much like Steve Austin, I'll be getting a fully bionic knee to replace the dubious one. I'm going to spare everybody a description of how they get it in there because it seems positively Medieval. However, the surgery is a few hours of outpatient work followed by several months of rehab. Carey had the same replacement from the same surgeon and six months later is doing far better, so I'm optimistic about the results.

I start twice-weekly rehab 5 days after the surgery, and should be able to walk with a cane in two or three weeks. My goal is to get back to cycling and lifting weights by next spring, so I'll be updating here with progress as it happens.
